Optimize Your Web Site for Search Engine Success

Utilize the material on this checklist, with accompanying glossary, to answer the following questions. You should understand the answers to the following questions. If you don't know your web site's designer should be able to provide reasonable answers.

NAMING CONVENTIONS

  • Are there keywords in your domain name?
  • Did you use keywords in your filenames? Example: wallets.html instead of products.html or store.html

HTML TITLE (Appears at the very top of the browser)

  • Does your title accurately describe your business? Example: "Ralphcowallets.com. Ralphco Imported Discount Wallets. Discount Wallet Leader in Italian Wallets." Instead of just www.ralphcowallets.com.
  • Do you have keywords in your title? Is your company name in your title?
  • Did you exclude words such as "the," "Internet," "web," and other common words?
  • Spider's consider alphabetic order. Are your keywords in alphabetic order?
  • Did you place the keywords close to one another? More Info
  • Are the keywords near the beginning of the description?
  • Did you stay away from all caps?
  • Does each page have a unique html title?

META TAGS-DESCRIPTIONS

  • Do you have a META Tags Description?
  • Does your META Tags description summarize your business?
  • Have you placed keywords in the description?
  • Did you place the keywords in the beginning of the description?
  • Did you avoid repeating keywords more than 3 times?
  • Is your description 150 characters?

META TAGS-KEYWORDS

  • Do you have a META Tags for Keywords?
  • Have you listed your keywords in order of importance?
  • Did you limit this section to 1024 characters?
  • How many times have you repeated keywords? Did you stay within 3 to 7 times?

ALT TAGS

  • Do all your images make use of ALT Tags?
  • Did you use sentences to display the keywords?

COMMENT TAGS

  • Do you have comment tags on each page?
  • Did you include keywords within the Comments?
  • Are the Comments placed after the META Tags?

INDEX PAGE TEXT (Your start page)

  • Do you have META Tags at the top of the page?
  • Are they before links to internal pages?
  • Are your keywords placed close to one another? Example "Discount Wallets" instead of "Discount leader in leather Wallets"
  • Do your keywords repeat at least 5 times per 100 words (Strive for 7 per 100)?

THEMES

  • Did you use similar META Tags, descriptions, and links on all pages?
  • How many themes run through your site? You should have no more than three.

LINKS

  • Do you have links to and from your site?
  • Are these links related to you business?
  • Do these links contain keywords?
